Men's Central Jail and Twin Towers — the two giant LASD facilities in downtown Los Angeles — process more inmates than almost any jails in the country. If your loved one is inside one of them, this guide tells you what to expect and how to get them out as fast as the system allows.
Which facility holds your loved one?
- Men's Central Jail (MCJ) — one of the largest jails in the United States, housing men in various security classifications. Address: 441 Bauchet St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
- Twin Towers Correctional Facility — a high-rise facility adjacent to MCJ that houses men and women, including inmates with medical and mental-health needs. Address: 450 Bauchet St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
Both are part of the same LASD Inmate Reception Center (IRC) complex, so booking, bail, and release procedures run through the same intake system.
How bail and release work at these facilities
- Find the inmate — use the LASD inmate locator (search "LASD inmate information") with the full name or booking number.
- Confirm the bail amount — shown in the inmate record; if it reads "No Bail" or "Hold," ask the facility or an attorney about next steps.
- Contact a licensed bail agent — we check the record, confirm bail, and start paperwork immediately. Electronic posting is available, so an agent does not need to physically be at Bauchet Street in most cases.
- Wait for processing — after the bond posts, IRC processes the release. Plan on 4–8 hours at these large facilities; it can occasionally stretch longer during busy periods.
Release times: what is realistic?
Smaller stations often release within 1–3 hours of posting. At MCJ and Twin Towers, 4–8 hours is the realistic range because hundreds of releases are processed daily. Weekends and holiday weekends are busier. There is no legal "fast lane" fee — anyone promising guaranteed faster processing for extra money should not be trusted.
Practical tips for families
- Bring photo ID if you meet an agent at the facility.
- Do not bring large amounts of cash to the jail — bail is posted by the agent, not paid at the window.
- Property (phones, wallets) is inventoried at booking and returned at release.
- Keep the defendant's court date written down. Missing a required appearance without sufficient excuse lets the court declare a forfeiture of the bail under California Penal Code §1305(a)(1) — though §1305 also provides a set-aside window (generally 180 days) in which a forfeiture may be vacated, and under §1305(a)(2)(A) no forfeiture may be declared if the case is dismissed or no complaint is filed within 15 days of arraignment.
